MAPS Curriculum

Teachers of English Language Learners
The lessons are designed according to the Chicago Public Schools ESL Goals & Standards Pre-K through 12, which apply to all Transitional Bilingual Education Programs in Chicago Public Schools. The term adapt/modify is used throughout the unit to indicate to the teacher that it might be necessary to alter the lesson plan to meet the needs of ELLs. For example:

  • Depending on the English-language proficiency, vary the amount of English and the student’s home language.
  • Search for applicable resources. Use teacher judgment. If the lesson is to be modified, alter it as necessary.
