Theme One - Telling a Story with Artifacts
Chicago Waterways is designed specifically for fifth-grade students. This program will help students develop an appreciation and understanding of the importance of water, our most valuable resource.
Students will be required to use critical-thinking skills to interpret and form judgments about waterways. Students will be able to bring forth prior knowledge and experiences that they can apply to the study of Chicago waterways.
Fifth-grade teachers will receive an integrated
unit about water and the role water plays in the lives of the
citizens of Chicago. Students will engage in a wide variety
of classroom activities and take an interactive field trip to The Peggy Notebaert Nature
Museum.
Theme Two - Telling the Story: Trials to Triumphs
Driving Forces Shaping Chicago: DuSable's Impact on
Chicago was designed specifically for fifth-grade general education students,
English Language Learners, and students with
disabilities. Students will be presented with an integrated
unit about the impact of DuSable's explorations upon the
development of the city of Chicago as a major business
and industrial community. Students will engage in a wide
range of activities and a field trip to DuSable Museum
of African American History. These experiences will help
students develop an appreciation and understanding of
the theme.
The study of DuSable's impact upon Chicago will
enhance students' understanding of how Chicago grew
and developed into one of the leading industrial centers in
the United States. The central theme of this unit focuses
on the ability of people to be willing to make choices and
take risks in order to accomplish their goals. This theme
will encourage critical thinking, creativity and free
exchange of ideas across a large, diverse, metropolitan
community.
