Teachers of English Language Learners
The lessons are designed according to Illinois State Goals, which also apply to bilingual education programs - ESL (English as a Second Language) or LEP (Limited English Proficiency). The term adapt/modify is used throughout the unit to indicate to the teacher that it might be necessary to alter the lesson plan to meet the needs of ELLs. For example:

• Depending on the English-language proficiency, vary the amount of English and the student’s home language.
• Search for applicable resources. Use teacher judgment. If the lesson is to be modified, alter it as necessary.
