The thematic unit, Chicago: Urbs
in Horto (City in a Garden), was designed specifically for third
grade
general education students, English language learners, and
students with disabilities. Students will engage in integrated
lessons, which will encourage them to learn more about significant
people, as well as cultural and natural events that impacted the
growth, development,
and diversity of Chicago from the 1900 to present. Literature,
historic narratives, activities, and a visit to Chicago Historical
Society or Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum will help students
develop their appreciation and understanding of the theme.
Lessons within this unit have been designed to be completed during
one to five class periods (45-60 minutes per day). The approximate
length of the entire unit is about five to six weeks; however,
teacher judgment should be used for the final determination. This
unit is flexible and allows for student and teacher creativity.
